Teak wood frame. This dining chair has a concave shape to the back and seat and are light-weight and easy to move. Teak (Tectona Grandis) is the unique and durable timber that has been used for many years. Its immense strength, related to its high oil content, prevents warping and protects it from the most extreme weather conditions. For these reasons, teak furniture is ideal for outdoor use. All teak furniture is from renewable sources and is certified . All the fittings are solid brass and are made flush with the wood. Time-honoured joinery techniques are used in the construction of teak furniture, using the latest machinery with extensive use of mortise and tenon joints secured by teak dowels. All that can be used is kiln dried. Structural joints are dowelled and weather-proofed with twin-pot polyurethane furniture adhesive for a lifetime of vigorous outdoor use. The brass fittings are used with a steel-threaded insert to maximise strength If left outside, teak furniture will mellow to a soft silvery-grey. If it is intended to keep the original colour, chairs should be cleaned at the end of each season, oiled and put away until the next season. Alternatively the furniture may be left to weather naturally. Furniture should be washed at the beginning of each new season. Our teak furniture is produced in Indonesia from sustainable sources. Teak is not indigenous to Java; it occurred originally along a narrow range through Asia including Burma, Thailand and Laos. It has subsequently been introduced into many south Asian countries. It was originally introduced to Java about 1000 A D and the current plantation system was introduced by the Dutch around the mid-1800s. Plantations were also established at the same time in India and in tropical America 100 years later, and have now spread to many parts of Africa and Latin America. "What is beautiful is a joy for all seasons". Oscar Wilde, The English Renaissance of Arts, 1881. PLEASE NOTE All of the teak furniture which we use is FSC certified. The Trademark of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) indicates that the wood used to make the product comes from a forest which is well managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. The forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated according to the principles and criteria for forest management agreed and approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. FSC is an international, non-profit association whose membership comprises environmental and social groups and progressive forestry and wood retail companies working in partnership to improve forest management worldwide. Until now the FSC certified teak garden furniture in the UK was sourced mainly from South America where the quality of wood is not as high as south east Asian teak because it comes from young trees. However, we have used its extensive contacts in Indonesia to source reclaimed teak which has secured FSC approval. It is the strongest and most durable teak in the world carrying the FSC certification. This means that our range of furniture is not only the highest quality, but also the most environmentally sound. The wood comes from recycled sources in Java. By reclaiming this immensely strong wood, we are able to take environmental responsibilities to a new level.
